ISO 14001 helped set out the criteria for Nationwide’s Environmental Management System (EMS). It enabled us to map out our framework so that as a company we could set up and follow an effective EMS of our own. We knew how important it was for us to improve our resource efficiency and to reduce waste, but we were genuinely surprised to discover that the entire process is effectively self-funding due to the significant cost savings our EMS delivered. A single example being a lighting wattage reduction of over 50% achieving major and ongoing energy cost savings.

David Scholes, Nationwide’s Chief Executive said “I am tremendously proud of the Nationwide team for achieving the 14001 standard. I would particularly like to thank our ISO coordinators for the effort and determination they have shown in helping us to achieve this important milestone”. The ISO 14001 standard is voluntary and our aim is to use it to continually improve our environmental performance, while complying with any applicable legislation.

Now, having achieved ISO 14001, Nationwide provide assurance to company management, employees and external stakeholders that environmental impact is being measured and improved. Gaining ISO 14001 accreditation has helped us meet our environmental responsibilities and economic goals. Having been fully integrated with our existing ISO 9001 accreditation and other management functions at head office we are ensuring an ongoing quality management system we can be proud of.
